tidemarks

here are some new pieces i have done today...
the first one is from an old bsa advert, and the second from an old marlboro advert.
i love those old adverts. i find them real funny - basically saying smoking and guns are good.
the third one is just for fun.

bsa

its been a while. i have finally finished my dissertation, which feels great. but is also the reason why i have not been updating stuff on here much lately.
currently im working on a project for the bath literature festival, for an idea they have called the 'poetry taxi'. the basic concept is to have a 'taxi' in the town centre, which people line up for, and get read a poem by the 'driver' when inside. maybe i will post some concept ideas up on here. maybe i wont.
my scanner is still doing this weird twist and crop thing it does sometimes - as you can see in the 'skulls and bsa' image. i think its the lines it doesnt like. as every image it does it to, has a series of lines in.
lately i am listening to a lot of peter broderick, tom waits and queens of the stone age playing covers.
you should be too.

oh, and also you should see this. its the new video from brody dalle and allain johannes' band spinnerette. the video, by liam lynch, is pretty amazing.

misbox disaster line

i love halloween, and its nearly here. listening to lots of misfits and eighties matchbox. here is a little fellow i am working on....
with this provoke change project, i am thinking about how people could potentially use tattoos to advertise more than just personal things.. branding and logos..

this is one of the coolest videos i have seen in a while

Monday 13 October 2008

vagabounds

These are for a 'provoke change' project.
I met this guy yesterday at work who had one of the worst tattoo's I have ever seen. He started talking to me because of one of mine he had seen, and then proceeded to show me his. (I dont care) It was a japanese Koi, and was so awful I didn't know what to say to him. I wish I had a picture to show the extent of this eyesore. But anyway, this brings me to the point of how mainstream tattooing has become. Anyone can get one. Literally, anyone.
Has tattooing lost it's magic charm? Its romanticism with criminal culture? Tattoo's are about Pirates. Thieves. Vagabounds. Lovable rebels. Not 17 year old kids thinking they are the next Scott Campbell, Mark Mahoney, Les Skuse or Horiyoshi III.
Bring it back gentle.

automations

If button D is pressed, the coin moves against cylinder F and pushes it into the hollow cylinder K where it serves as a plunger, causing a displacement of the channel in the vicinity of F.
And so I produced these:

ZINE core

hope you guessed my name....

2nd year is nearly over..
TO DO:
finish graphic novel (2 more drawings...) scan. print. bind.
scan and print out my cd project.
put together my 'journey' project.
and now working on a self-initiated project.

I started with the idea doing a cook book....
then decided id rather make some of those postcard flyers with recipes on... the type you get bombarded on you at the door in sainsburys
then i decided that i didnt want to spend 3 weeks drawing food and saucepans...

so i have chosen to stick with the ideas of recipes... but not for food..
RECIPES:

Home-Made Tattoos
D.I.Y Taxidermy
Tye-Dye Your Wardrobe
Moonshine - Bring it on home
Camera in a Box Project
......

almost a battle against boredom.. recipes for some interesting things to do... usually involving a handful of 40s and some rolling stones..

i did a picture. here it is.

Tuesday 20 May 2008

Saturday 3 May 2008

enredado arriba en jugado

so
been working on this graphic novel
been bouncing back and fourth between ideas so fast i havnt even had a chance to update on here where i am at

the deal right now..
is that im making a graphic novel
on the blues
loose narrative using lyrics from classic blues songs...
its going to be called 'blue devils'
very mixed media... with a real mexican day of the dead feel to the illustrations..
more updates soon
its my girlfriends birthday tomorrow
and boris johnson is mayor of london
madness

Tuesday 15 April 2008

is there a bustle in your hedgerow?

so... finished those hand drawings for my wall piece... as you can see..

so now working on my "TRUE STORIES" graphic novel....
i am currently thinking of basing it on the story of ROBERT JOHNSON
one of the first few blues guitarists said to have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads in exchange for his musical talent..
i want to do something quite sinister and eerie.. plus, i fucking love the blues. gives me a great excuse to listen to loads of it the next few weeks....

Monday 14 April 2008

rainy monday

so, its a rainy april monday
finishing off my 'wall' project... which has to go up in an exhibition on thursday.. which doesnt make me smile
having been away all easter in morocco... and having had to work loads when i got back for money, i havnt had much time to spend on this project.
basically, i am looking at the topic of "YOU ARE HERE"
basing my work on my trip to morocco too...
i am drawing (by hand) two hands...
one on each wall. one is lavishly decorated in henna style patterns (i have also looked in moroccan symbolisms... and i have largely used symbols of safety (as this is what you would really want in your hotel room surely...)
and on the other hand i am placing the moroccan flag.
this is not the most exciting idea... nor will it be brilliantly executed... but i am doing my best to get this done and out of the way.. as i am itching to start on the Graphic Novel. "TRUE STORIES"
here is an image of my work in progress::::::

yes its a shit image.. i took it on my phone...
for thursday i still have to finish the red hand... then make a small scale model of the room to illustrate how it will look... and i have a workshop on wednesday. so that is what my next two days will be.....

Wednesday 9 April 2008

wednesday

just found out that my project is actually due in next week, and not tomorrow, which is nice. can do a better job of the presentation now.
just for reference, i am working on the 'a wall' project. which is to...
"Design a large-scale image/design that will be used on a minimum of 2 walls in a hotel room."
I am basing my work on my morocco trip...
and the theme "YOU ARE HERE"
so... i am thinking about national identity... and what i think i will present is two walls with an large image of a hand on each..
(images to come soon)
one hand will be highly decorated in henna.. the other with the moroccan flag.
drawn in a slightly disjointed faux-naiive style. black outlines and emphasised shapes.
maybe an 'essaouira blue' background...
like i said... images to be updated soon.. but here... enjoy this tasty morsal. someone has to.

Monday 7 April 2008

ghatchet

off up to uni now... working on 'a room' project.
basically, 2 3x4m wall pieces to potentially go somewhere like in a hotel bedroom...
im basing mine on my morocco trip... henna work, tanneries and essaouirra blue...
i'll update some images soon.. but to keep you entertained for now... here is a gherkin, hacking down a tree. take it any way you like....

Friday 4 April 2008

hogshair

been working on some paintings today
its been so long since i got the paints out. feels good. i do love pen and ink, but i do feel restricted by it sometimes.
using lots of layers.. but being careful with my colour schemes... i find myself being a bit immature with my choice of colours sometimes. so i have tried to keep it subtle, yet pretty striking.
i shall post some images of my paintings up asap...

the triumphant return

I am back.
I have returned safely from the my adventures in california and nevada.
I have made several discoveries:
1) I love San Francisco.
2) I would love to work for Chronicle Books
3) I owe MOMs $200 and they owe me a sugar skull
4) I hate the people in Las Vegas
5) Never ever return to Vegas

Back into work mode now
Working on mock CD artwork.
I'm looking at old school tattoo designs... victorian kids toys... and the work of william morris for inspiration
